All you need to know about USMLE

What is USMLE?

USMLE is a licensing exam conducted by the government of the USA for medical graduates and it stands for United States Medical Licensing Examination.

This examination is designed for those who wish to settle down in the United States and practice the profession of medicine.

All about steps and centers:

USMLE involves not just one but 4 tests (Step 1, Step 2 CK & CS, Step 3) to be taken at different times, so prepare your timeline accordingly.

Then take Step 2 CK which is taken during the internship phase.

Unlike these two, the Step 2 CS is a pragmatic approach towards the assessment of the candidate so you will have to reach the states and book your slot at any of the 5 centers wherein this exam is conducted.

These 5 centers are

· Atlanta, Georgia.

· Chicago, Illinois.

· Houston, Texas.

· Los Angeles, California.

· Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Then comes last but not least, the USMLE Step 3. This is the final test which involves the assessment of your ability to apply medical knowledge into the practice of medicine without any supervision.

These points are very important and you must keep them in mind while preparing for USMLE:

  • · If you pass all the steps of USMLE then there is a rule that you cannot attempt again for 7 years, this means the score you get while appearing for USMLE will be permanent and will decide your future so
    score well.
  • · These scores will help you in getting your preferred specialty.
Also, you should Strengthen your CV through other things like LoR, Personal Statement, certificates of extra-curricular activities, etc.
  • After clearing Step 3, you will be working as a part of Residency programs where you will be getting a stipend ranging anywhere between 50,000–60,000 Dollars.

ECFMG certification is done when you have cleared all the steps of USMLE (Except step 3). This certification ensures that an IMG (International Medical Graduate) is now ready to take part in the fellowship and the residency programs.

Moreover, it is valid for a lifetime. However, you should not delay in entering into the residency program since the sooner the better.

The total expenditure of the USMLE test:

The cost of Step 1 & Step 2 is determined by the ECFMG while the cost for step 3 is determined by FSMB. Since it is a US-based exam, the figures will be mentioned in Dollars.

The first step is to apply for the ECFMG certification which will cost around $135.

After completing the registration exam fee for 1st two steps need to be paid which is:

For USMLE Step 1- $940

USMLE Step 2 CK- $940

3rd step is to pay exam fees for Step 2 CS which is $1580

Note: If you wish to extend the eligibility period of Step 1 or Step 2 CK, then the cost will be $80. If the candidate requires to change their test location, then the cost would be $75.

The fee for rescheduling the appointment for Step 2 CS can vary from $0 to–1,290.

The cost for a recheck of the score is $80 which applies to all the 3 exams mentioned above.

For Step 3 exam fee is $895 as confirmed by FSMB. This fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

6 Tips to score in NEET 2021

Getting a good score is not only necessary for MBBS admission in India but also very important for taking admission in MBBS abroad. For students who have not started their preparation, they can start with these tips. So without let’s get started:

1. Attempt Biology First: Always attempt exam in order Biology, chemistry and then Physics. Biology has a maximum weight of marks. Doing this you will easily score 300 marks in the first half.

2. Do not fill OMR after every question: Avoid filling OMR after solving every question as it increases the chances of making mistakes. Fill OMR after a fixed interval or after every subject completion.

3. Attempt sure questions first: It is advised to attempt all questions whose answer you are sure at first: Focus on all other questions at the end. Do not waste time on questions you don’t know.

4. Focus on your paper: Do not panic if a student is continuously solving all questions. Focus on your own paper. Do not copy as sometimes we copywrong answers.

5. Do not attempt all questions: Attempt only questions you know the answer of. Every right answer gives you 4 marks and -1 for the wrong answer.
